Acker awarded ‘State Champion’ in showmanship
The Pennsylvania State 4-H Horse Show took place Oct. 28-30, in Harrisburg, Pa. at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex & Expo Center. The three-day show included participants from all across the state competing for the title of state champion in the classes in which they had qualified. Saegertown eighth grader Hayley Acker traveled to Harrisburg with her Paint horse, CES U Don’t Know Jack. Acker rides “Jack” English and qualified in three classes for the state show: English Jr. Showmanship, Jr. Horse Undersaddle, and 4 Year Old English Futurity. “I didn’t think I’d win anything because it was his (Jack’s) first year at the show,” Acker said. But she was wrong. She took third place in the Jr. Horse Undersaddle class, but the best was yet to come. After the showmanship class, Acker was amazed to hear that she was the English Jr. Showmanship State Champion. “I was surprised. My mom was flipping out, and Amanda Parker was crying,” Acker said. Showmanship requires the handler to have the horse next to him or her and perform the pattern in-front of the judge. “The pattern was medium hard. Almost the same pattern as the District pattern,” said Acker. She received a first place ribbon and a metal plaque engraved with the show name, the class name, and Champion across the middle.
