Last month, fellow staff writer Gavin W. and I attended the Erie Otters vs. Barrie Colts hockey game at Tullio Arena in Erie. We contacted Paul Roper, who is the media relations manager for the Erie Otters, to secure media passes that allow full access to the venue and event. We picked up our passes at the media gate entrance, which is located near the visitors’ locker room. We were directly on the glass behind the visitors’ goalie, looking into the visitors’ locker room entrance.

As awesome as this location was, we were not satisfied as we were to be covering the Erie Otters, not the Barrie Colts. Gavin and I walked around the arena where we showed our media passes to a woman who escorted us down to the Otters’ locker room entrance. We were very excited to have this location, and we used it to take great photographs of the Otters as they stomped the Colts 12-3.

Star player and team captain, Greg McKegg, left the game at the end of the second period. As the third period came to a close, we saw him come out of the locker room tunnel and interviewed him about the game and the Otters’ season. “Any time you beat a team 12-3 its a good night. We’re just happy to get two points. We’ve had a pretty good first half of the season, and we’re looking to make a long playoff run. We just made a couple acquisitions and we’re hoping that will work out for us,” said McKegg.  As sports writers, it was exhilarating for us to be able to attend an event like this, and we hope it is the first of many to come.
